In this video I will repair the broken SAS SFF-8643 ports on a Dell HBA330 controller card. Nothing particularly special here, but I was repairing a batch of these cards so I thought I would record me doing this in hopes this might be helpful to someone.

      I don't know if you saw my reply to your other post, but you don't need to downgrade the firmware to P19, and that's not recommended. You just need a LSI ROM downgrade by sub-revision, still part of P20. Get the mptsas2.rom file for version from P20 package version 07.39.00.00 and it should work around the HP issue.

    I have no experience of the z820. However I do have 12 HP z series servers, from z210 (x4) to z440 (x2). Most of these boot from NVME M.2 drives in PCIe slots. One is a genuine HP card, the rest are generic cheap-on-eBay cards. What you read on HP's web site, is what they have tested and found reliable. This is a tier 1 company, and they test things exhaustively. Most of the potential options have not been tested by HP. Test it yourself. If it doesn't work for you, you can get most of your money back by selling it on, on eBay.

    Why not put the H330 in HBA mode? No flashing required its just a setting, no need to flash to IT mode. It has no cache and HBA is pass through mode that should work with ZFS NAS software.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer 15 дней назад

      You could do that and it will work. But it doesn't change the PCIe ID, so it will still load the megasas driver instead of the HBA driver like mpt3sas. This is problematic for certain OSes and the software integration on top of that. But, I've demonstrated the use of even full on RAID controllers using SDR0 and it is all usable.

    • @Physics072
      @Physics072 15 дней назад

      @@ArtofServer Hmmm I don't do not know that xigmaNas will even have that driver to load. Windows OS yes. Or are you talking about loaded from the H330/H730 built in firmware/bios boot loader? Yea that will load no matter what. Will flashing it to IT mode upset the Dell Idrac or monitoring hardware? Thought I read someplace that it does, is why I was thinking just putting it in HBA mode might be better. But maybe just buying a cheap Dell HBA330 would be best and pulling the H330/H730. Its not here yet, just going to combine two sets of old ZFS XigmaNas raid1 zfs to a new box with more expansion. Im just trying to avoid issues as I have not actually done this type of swap before and dells can be picky about changing things. Should I just get a HBA330 for the smoothest less fiddling around experience? I have read a few people claiming the HBA mode is not exactly the same like they lost their pool due to it. but did not elaborate why/how. That is a bit concerning to me.

    Inspur cards aren't "fake" as such. They're using a licensed design, genuine LSI chips and are pretty well built (heatsinking is for server use, as you point out) P20 firmware might have been the issue. It's notorious for problems with SATA drives and the general recommendation is to downgrade to P19

      @@ArtofServer They're widely described as such by people who don't understand how OEM licensing works. I agree it's return fraud in your case but the likely reason you got it was that the client regarded it as "fake" from a "returns not accepted" vendor (common for Chinese sellers) FWIW the Inspur cards _are_ cheap(*), but to be honest I'd avoid sas2008/3008 family for home use anyway The reason for saying that is they can't be turned to low power PCIe mode(**) and prevent the host computer from reaching sleep/low power modes This is especially germane if you want a silent PC - the ARM-based LSI controllers (9400 onwards) not only draw much less power than the PowerPC ones, but allow the host system to go to C6 modes too, so whilst there may be an "on paper" variation of 10W between the cards you can easily see 60-80W on the whole system In your position I'd sell the card cheaply with a 30 day warranty. There's always someone who will buy it as long as it's tested (*) Usually, but there are some chinese vendors who take the proverbial (**) sas3008 cards can have L0/L1 enabled but at cost of lots of random SMART errors and it's a serious faff to set the modes

    I really really love this technology. Hard drives are getting bigger and bigger with 22TB being the max currently. However, if you put a 22TB drive into a RAID and start rebuilding, you`ll die of old age until its finished rebuilding (and one other drive probably will too). Having double the speed, which is very realistic when rebuilding, it could cut your wait time in half. Especially if the HAMR technology allows for 30+TB drives, you need a way to make reading and writing faster. Maybe one day we`ll get 3 or 4 arms? Only sad thing about this is that it`s detected as 2 separate drives... not practical in my case. Seagate has to do something that the device is detected as a single drive, either by some software driver (idk if driver would be the correct word here) or maybe some chip on the HDD itself that fuses the "two HDDs" into a RAID0 without the OS really knowing it. Best case scenario would be that they even implement a way where you can (at least globally) toggle how the OS should see those multi activator drives. Either as a combined drive or as individuals. Oh and as always thank you for doing such a great job with these explanation videos. Not too long, all the important details explained and in a very understandable way.

      yeah, I think if the 2 halves were virtualized into a single LUN, that would be easier to use. Welcome to the channel and hope you find more useful content! thanks for watching! :-)

      yeah, I'm seeing more of these Inspur cards floating around on eBay. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with them, but in this case the heatsink feels a bit small for a pretty hot chip.

I might need it when I try to just piece together a SAS backplane with a 8 disk housing which will be outside of the server because it won't fit inside. I've heard good things about Nocta fans which I might add to that. I'm hesitant to replace the mainOEM Dell fans with Noctuas because they seems to run a lower RPMs so of course they'll be quieter. So, all this because I don't think I would want a NetApp that will add 200Watt on top of my already 150 Watt.

    New to your channel and this came as a recommended video, so I watched it. I hope you were able to dispute the theft and keep the money from the sale. As far as the tape over the logos... Louis Rossman touched on this years ago in several videos. The tape is there to cover the log and help slip past customs. Apple, in the context of his video, claimes all parts with their logo are clones, even if those parts are proven to be removed from trash and sold as used. Part of the anti-right to repair tactic, if you can't get parts, you'll buy new.

One question I do have, and havent seen all your videos yet so not sure if it's been answered already. Many of the caser, including the possible 9305-24 I got, have a 4 pin header. What is that used for? I say "mistake" as the car runs really hot. Would like to 3D print a shroud and add a fan, but concerned that should a small fan fail, a shround would then assist in it's cooking. I was looking around when I found you to see if there was a way to add a fan and have it RPM monitored (4 pin header maybe?)

    will ZFSs arrays typically support 10GB ethernet transfers or 25GB links?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer 25 дней назад

      that highly depends on how you configure your ZFS pool, what type of transfers you are doing (sequential vs random, large blocks vs small blocks, etc.) and the performance characteristics of your storage devices.

    the solder mask (green overlay on the pcb) can be different shades as they may use different bare pcb manufactorers depending on pricing. Even different lots from the same PCB MFG can be different shades. The best thing to look for is lack of ground vias in the counterfeit along with cheap chinese capacitors instead of better japanese ones

    I can't quote statistics at the moment, but I've been very pleased with the apparent performance of the built-in LSI-2308 RAID controller on the Z840. There's also a built-in Intel with RSTe RAID controller that's supposed to be even more performant than the LSI controller on the Z840.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer 25 дней назад

      Indeed! The only negative I have about the onboard LSI SAS2308 controller is that HP cut half the PCIe lanes. It is a PCIe 3.0 x8 capable chip, but if you check, it is connecting at PCIe 3.0 x4. This is enough bandwidth for HDD and a few SSDs, but it won't be enough if you're using something like 8x SSDs.
